Integration in DTO infrastructure (WP5)

WP description

In this work package we focus on accelerating and enhancing data streams and digital tools, ensuring they work harmoniously across a range of existing infrastructures from related projects. This approach facilitates the adoption of continuous ecology as a new way of working in policy-making and extends the use of marine data and Digital Twin Ocean (DTO) infrastructure to a broader user base.

We aim to support the operationalization of data streams and demonstrators by creating digital tools and services that streamline data processing workflows, making continuous streaming seamless and ensuring high-quality integration into infrastructure. This tools automate key steps, from design to testing, and provide scientists with accessible R/Python libraries that simplify access to data streams, masking the intricacies of HPC and large-scale storage providers.

We also focus on achieving interoperability and compatibility, aligning our data streams with Digital Twin-ready standards established by various initiatives, ensuring that they seamlessly integrate into the EMODNET infrastructure. This alignment helps consolidate standards, protocols, and interoperability across different infrastructures, enabling models and digital twin applications to run smoothly on various platforms.

Moreover, we are committed to establishing a durable governance framework that regulates access to the DTO infrastructure and ensures the sustainable use of resources. This involves creating procedures, rules, and standard agreements to guarantee the ongoing availability of data, models, and digital twin applications.

In addition, we provide technical support for demonstrators by creating software packages, interfaces, and modules that transform existing workflow code into code ready for integration into Digital Twin infrastructures with GPU acceleration, HPC deployment, and scalability.

In summary, Work Package 5 is dedicated to advancing digital tools and services that promote interoperability, governance, and technical capabilities across diverse infrastructures, driving innovation and the adoption of continuous ecology and marine data usage. 

Key tasks

  • Create digital tools and services that streamline data processing workflows, making continuous streaming seamless and accessible while automating key steps for future uptake. 
  • Ensure data streams align with Digital Twin-ready standards from various initiatives, promoting interoperability and harmonizing standards and protocols across different infrastructures. 
  • Establishes a robust governance framework, regulating access to the DTO infrastructure, ensuring sustainable resource usage, and creating standard agreements for data and application availability. 
  • Provide technical support to demonstrators, transforming existing workflow code into Digital Twin-ready code with GPU acceleration and scalability enhancements, with a focus on high-impact research community demonstrators. 

Key expected outcomes

  • Harmonised data, protocols, and vocabularies, amongst biodiversity monitoring networks and actors, including citizens science programmes, and national authorities monitoring programmes;
  • Secured, sustained and reliable data flows from biodiversity monitoring actors, including research projects, and national and international monitoring programmes, into DTO data repositories, from data collectors to data integrators, and their integration/assimilation in existing models;
  • Economies of scale and enhanced standardisation through pilot sea-basin scale monitoring for species across the trophic chains (plankton, including microbes, fishes, marine mammals, reptiles and birds, and other if considered important).
