From sharp edge to reed bed - The beginning of a new era - DTO-BioFlow Matchmaking Event - Phase 1

On 17 April 2026, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, the DTO-Bioflow team related to Demonstrator Use Case 1 (DUC 1) and Demonstrator Use Case 5 (DUC 5) will be exploring the opportunities to integrate biodiversity-enhancing structures and digital monitoring approaches into the redevelopment of quay walls in Gothenburg.

What Will Be Discussed

This consultation will focus on the planned reconstruction of quay walls in Gothenburg and the opportunity to incorporate biodiversity-positive structures as part of the redevelopment process.

Participants will discuss the design of a 20 cm deep layer of habitat-enhancing structures that can be integrated into the quay walls using materials generated during the construction process. The objective is to create a suitable habitat for both attached and mobile marine fauna and to support ecological succession over time.

The meeting will explore potential structural designs, including removable plate-like modules that can be periodically recovered and analysed. Discussions will also address the installation of underwater observatories to support the monitoring of fish communities.

In addition, participants will examine how monitoring activities can benefit from DTO-BioFlow resources, including:

  • Genetic monitoring approaches developed through DUC1.

  • Image-based monitoring and computer vision approaches developed through DUC5.

  • Long-term monitoring of ecological succession using complementary digital methods.

Participants

  • Skanska

  • Centre for Sea and Society

  • University of Gothenburg

Looking Ahead

The outcomes of this consultation are expected to support the development of a preliminary monitoring framework and will be further discussed during a follow-up meeting scheduled for June 2026.
