DTO-BioFlow is proud to take part in the International Society for Ecological Modelling Global Conference 2025, taking place from 19-23 October at the Kashiwa-no-ha Conference Centre, Kashiwa, Japan.

The 2025 conference will be held under the theme, ‘From Data to Decision: Empowering Ecosystem Management through Modelling’. It will highlight the pivotal role of advanced ecological modelling in transforming diverse datasets into decision-making and actionable management strategies for sustainable ecosystem management.

Our Contribution

On 21 October, during Poster Session 2, Gabriela Oliveira from CIIMAR will present the DTO-BioFlow poster titled:
“Ecological Modelling and the Digital Twin of the Ocean: Integrating Production, Predation and Habitat Suitability for Sustainable Kelp Mariculture.”

Featured within Demonstrator Use Case (DUC) 4 – Spatial Planning of Sustainable Mariculture, DTO-BioFlow integrates environmental, biological, and genomic data to develop predictive models that support sustainable aquaculture planning. The case study focuses on macroalgae (kelp) mariculture, combining ecological, statistical, and spatial modelling to optimise sustainable aquaculture systems. It considers predation losses, seaweed biodiversity, and future scenario simulations to (1) identify optimal farming sites, (2) assess biodiversity interactions, and (3) forecast biomass yields. This work includes a regional focus on Portugal, showcasing practical applications of digital twin technology in ecosystem-based mariculture planning.
